Ferraby Lionheart – Catch the Brass Ring – Album Review

LA born, Nashville Raised, Chicago schooled, and LA settled Ferraby Lionheart’s latest release Catch the Brass Ring arrived in the mail today and it’s found it’s way onto my “everyday mix” on my iPod. When you hear this record you might think that listening to it on an iPod doesn’t do it justice, as you should really be on laying on an old carpet huddled close to an old phonograph. If this record comes out on vinyl, I may do just that.

Catch the Brass ring is an LA folk salad with bits of trumpet, violin, lazy guitar, and sprinkled with Vaudeville. Think Elliott Smith on happy days or a more mild-mannered Rufus Wainwright. If there’s a bridge between those two singer songwriters, Ferraby Lionheart is busking on it.

The highlight of this eclectic folk/jazz/Vaudeville/indie/pop record is the cleverly written lyrics. The words of Ferraby are introspective yet voyeuristic at the same time, like we’re hearing the inner monologue of someone peering at life from behind a bush.

Around LA, Ferraby Lionheart is in the running for the king of Silverlake. He frequents the Silverlake Lounge and El Cid and can often be found playing at Tangier in Los Feliz.  You may notice that he’s showing up to his shows on his orange bicycle. Ferraby gave up his car a while ago (so maybe help him with his equipment.)
