Best place to take Mom in LA?

April 22nd, 2008 · 4 Comments

Inspired by Tara’s Mom’s trip to LA, I’m wondering where I’ll take my mom when she finally visits me. Every time I bring up visiting she brings up how she came here in the last 60’s, and apparently she doesn’t think it’s changed much since. Maybe it hasn’t…. eh I’m guessing it has.

Anyway, the question is: Where do you take Mom? Like Tara, I’m also on the west side, but coming from New England, I don’t know if she’d be as psyched to go to Sonny McLean’s as I am, seeing as she lives Sonny McLean’s 24/7.

Here are my thoughts for places to go when my Mom is in town, please add your own thoughts:

1. Rodeo Drive - My mom really thinks that I should be spending my time hanging out on Rodeo Drive because then I’d get to meet and hang out with all of the famous people. I try to explain to her that only jackasses hang out on Rodeo Drive, and the famous people actually go to boutiques on Robertson and have the store owner open for them at 2am so they’re not bothered. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, and you can’t convince your 60 yr old mom that Rodeo Drive is not the place to be, so sure, a walk up and down Rodeo Drive would have to happen.

2. The Chinese Theater - Yes, just like Chad said in a recent post, you have to hit up the Chinese Theater and see the footprints and Hollywood Walk of Fame. Mom will probably want her photo taken with Neil Diamond and Regis’ stars, do they have stars on the walk? I don’t know.

3. Ride through the hills with a star map - Sure you’ll only be able to see the gated-off driveway and surveillance camera, but to Mom, that’ s Chandler from Friends’ house and that’s pretty star-striking

4. The Hollywood Sign - From all angles, like seriously, drive around the city pointing out the Hollywood sign so she can brag to all of her friends how you live in Hollywood (West LA) next to Julia Roberts.

5. Venice Beach - But maybe only a taste. I get the heart palpitations going down there, I don’t know about Mom. But a nice pitcher of beer or a few wines at the Sidewalk Cafe will make it all good.

That’s all I can think of right now, please share other places to take mom as I’m sure it’ll come in handy sooner than later.

I’m thinking some vintage shopping in Sherman Oaks could help a bit.

Venice: Rose Cafe or Urth Cafe are great bets!

If you’re not afraid to head east, Pasadena is the momiest place to be.

One great place to take mom to is Santa Monica Pier. Another sweet hangout as Duke’s in Malibu Beach. You can see the waves crash against the rocks as you drink your margarita.
