Yesterday the World Values Survey, done regularly by a global network of social scientists, announced in order the World’s happiest countries and the United States Ranked 16th. Who was the happiest country? Denmark! With its democracy, social equality, and peaceful atmosphere, researchers say it’s the happiest country in the world.
Happiest Countries:
- Denmark (see photo)
- Puerto Rico
- Colombia
- Northern Ireland
- Iceland
- Switzerland
- Ireland
- the Netherlands
- Canada
- Sweden
Least Happiest: Zimbabwe-
So here is my question, are people really that happy now with soaring gas prices, a slumping housing market, and the billions spent in the IRAQ war? I guess I am glad to see that so many people are so optimistic with all the depressing crap going on these days. From the looks of this photo I’d be happy living in Denmark too, however Columbia at #3, come on! I have a Columbian friend that was recently granted political asylum in the US as his life was being threatened for being gay and he would face persecution upon his return…that doesn’t sound like a very happy place to me. Plus the DEA and the Colombian National police still believe there are more than 300 active drug smuggling organizations in Colombia today..that doesn’t sound to happy to me either.
For those who are wondering how this list was determined: 350,000 people from around the world were surveyed and asked two simple questions: “Taking all things together, would you say you are very happy, rather happy, not very happy, not at all happy?” And, “All things considered, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days?” For more info click here.

These survey’s are flawed I think. I’m with you that high gas prices, war, recession oriented economic trends and the like should make people something less than happy.
The think is how well do they survey all the components of society within each country. Politicians and CEO’s of oil companies are quite content right now regardless of the impact of current conditions.
People on a fixed income can’t be happy with prices rising on food and other things due to higher transportation costs, much less the cost of gas and energy related bills.

If you really think you’d be happier in Denmark, you should probably move there. Why waste time sitting around in a country you don’t like. All you’re really doing is annoying the majority of people who live in the U.S. and love it.

Good idea Jason P. Anytime you are not happy with the state of the US, you should just leave. Why even try to make it a better place? Love it or leave it. Suckers like you are the reason we are in this mess. Complacent fools that follow their leaders as if we lived in a dictatorship. Our country was founded on ideals that promoted questioning government and leadership.
Our country endorses torture, condones invading countries for business profit, and worst of all suspends constitutional rights.
If that doesn’t upset you enough to vote out all of our representatives, nothing will. –> America, love it, or help change it.

Guess people in Columbia are all in a state of drug induced euphoria. What else would they be happy for?

LOL @ Ling’s comment. Good one! And you are probably right. I cannot fathom any other reason they would be so “high” on the list.

I’m not sure how reliable the results of this survey are. If America is 16th then the rest of the world must be in depression.
