Well, it’s a victory for lesbians everywhere except those who actually hail from the island of Lesbos, that is. For those of you who never read the assigned readings in your college humanities courses, Lesbos is the home of ancient Greek poet Sappho, whose erotic lesbian-themed poetry from the 7th Century B.C. made the island synonymous with female homosexuality.
Earlier this year, contemporary islanders got fed up with the use of the term which should properly mean “anyone who hails from Lesbos” to refer to “anyone who engages in hot girl-on-girl action.” They sued in a Greek court in an attempt to stop people all over the world from engaging in this sort of slander. But an Athens court just threw out their case, ruling that the use of the term did not slander the island’s residents. The court was also swayed by the testimony of several islanders who pointed out that the term had boosted the island’s tourist trade. Dude, who wants to join me on a summer getaway? I know this cool little spot just off the Turkish coast where the chix are all about hot girl-on-girl action!
