Just found the following posts on Craigslist’s Rants & Raves:

The Venice Beach Hostel on Windward & Pacific Avenue is a rip off. Avoid it at all cost. I just returned from a one week stay in that smelly slum. Our room had stained sheets, stained blankets, dirty towels, crusty furniture, mold on the bathroom ceiling and bed bugs! I paid over $700 in advance. The manager is a real asshole and refused to refund my money after I saw how terrible the room was.

I’ve been in that place visiting a friend. It’s horrible. Dark, dirty, and feels decrepit. If I were you or anyone else, report them to the housing authorities.

Because they are nearly on Venice beach, they think they can rip off people and treat them like shit. I’d also report the manager. Stand up and don’t be meek. Find out who runs/owns the place ( do a web search) and start complaining loud. Otherwise your rant is useless!

Anyone else been here? I drive by it pretty often and you can tell from the outside that it’s not the greatest place to stay.

  • most hostels here in new york city are also a rip off. Good job on reporting on these.
  • years ago I used to work at a Bar on the third street promenade for 5 years and all the tourists that came in and out of the hostles complained about price and conditions. I think most people get screwed cuz they book in advance and are from out of the country...from what I have heard hostels other places in the world are a lot nicer in comparison and a lot less expensive. Only crappy thin is your alternatives are still more expensive.

    Venice is an interesting place to visit when you're a tourist, during the day anyway.. at night that place is pretty sketchy, and from the looks of the place just walking by, the inside might not be too much better.
  • I stayed here a few years back when living in venice. I was no older than 18 and a dirty ass kid who was on drugs and this place still grossed me out! We were staying in the 2 person rooms for $60 a night and paying ahead for the next night when we stayed…One night we came back at 2am from partying to find out that our room was given away to someone else, refunded our money and had no place to go at 2am in Venice.
