Time Warner Internet Outages in the Los Angeles area

What’s going on with Time Warner’s internet outtages in the Los Angeles area?  Are they clocking out at 10pm or something?  For the past two nights I’ve suddenly lost the ability to reach a site in a browser.  Oddly enough I’m able to instant message and receive emails.. but no web access.  What’s the deal Time Warner?  Do you have to suck this hard at EVERY service you offer?  DAMN.

What say you Twittersphere???

Michael Doss
mikebdoss @LAsnark They used to do tests at the same time every night for me in OC, but never tell us first - sometimes 30 min. I’m on DSL now.

    funny it's happening to others.

here's my twist on the situation. i have a wireless network. it affects two Macs on the network, but not the PC that also shares the network.

    bill gates would be proud.
  • The routers are congested as hell.. it's a situation that's been going on for a year and it's gotten MUCH worse lately.

Do some traceroutes. I've been emailing them traceroutes for months and, honestly, they don't care. For real laughs, try calling into their tech support as they ask you to clear your "brauza kesh".

Also see this for hundreds of complaints:

  • I agree. They should keep Gitmo open, just to send TWC-LA Metro division president Jeffrey Hirsch there.

    ugh my internet too!

I was reading on DSL Reports (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cable,rr) that the problem might be from TimeWarner's DNS servers. There was a somewhat technical way to get around the problem listed in one of the threads. BTW, TimeWarner has NOT updated their DNS servers since a MAJOR hacking issue was discovered months ago.
  • It is NOT a DNS issue (well, they may have a DNS issue, but that's not what's causing these issues.)

I've been using OpenDNS for a very long time, and while it's awesome for my DNS resolution, and probably prevents me from having ADDITIONAL issues, I still have to deal with Time Warner's *massively congested* routers.

It's router congestion and poor network management that is causing these issues. I've been struggling with them for a year and there's been no fix. It's markedly worse the last couple of months.

Those of you who think it's DNS, just do some traceroutes and you will see where the real problem lies.

Our connection goes out somewhere between 1 and 8 AM almost daily. If not for 30 minutes, then the full 4-6 hours. Remind how much we pay for service? A LOT!

I know, it's terrible. If anyone wants go to ahead and recommend another high speed cable option in the LA area, please, by all means, go ahead!

time to look for a new provider, this is bull... I was it was because I dropped down to the second tier (cheaper) service.. guess not.
  • @ John - You could send the Time Warner people to Gitmo. Or, you could shift the Gitmo gang to LA, and have them work as support crew for Time Warner. Solves the problem of where to put the Gitmo detainees, and Time Warner's customer service will improve a heck of a lot.
