Why are women posting their bra color on Facebook? Men want to know.

by Jon on January 7, 2010

I don’t check Facebook as much as I used to (because I’m working hard, hey boss!) but when I checked this afternoon, I noticed that all of my female Facebook friends, from various locations around the country, were sharing the color of their bra.  Why?  Apparently to raise breast cancer awareness.   The meme was apparently spread by the forwarding of a Facebook message that read:

“Something fun is going on.  Write the color of your bra in your status. Just the color, nothing else. And send this on to ONLY women no men. It will be neat to see if this will spread the wings of cancer awareness.  It will be fun to see how long it takes before the men wonder why the women have a color in their status…..LOL!”

This is a pretty clever way to raise awareness of breast cancer, and it certainly has a lot of male Facebookers confused.  This information would have been very valuable in junior high.

Peter Criss did more for breast cancer awareness than updating your facebook status with the color of your bra. Please. stop. the. madness.

It was a nice attempt to confuse us men, but women started posting the message to their status updates/comments to explain it, thus ruining the secret.

Or … instead of just posting bra color to confuse guys (who are, as posted above, not immune to breast cancer), GET INFORMED about ALL cancer, with a focus on breast cancer. Post your bra color, or heck, if you're male, the color of your undies. If someone asks why, TELL them about breast cancer, about prostate cancer, about cancer in general. Let this turn into a wave of information that will save lives… everyone's lives… by making EVERYONE more actually aware.

How this raises awareness for anything is beyond comprehension. All guys should post in their status tomorrow their favorite descriptive word for really bored women with no lives.

I'm gay. Women seek attention from me for the whole “gay friend” thing. Always SO proud to introduce me as their gay friend. I have female friends yes, but I don't keep the ones mentioned prior close. Easy to spot. You ladies can be quite absurd.

I can't imagine what straight men have to put up with. Marriage and babies and all those horrible things they really don't want and would rather play video games, travel, see their friends, further their career, put money away etc. Instead they get sucked into what's on your chest and down below and sacrifice all they love for some woman that treats him like he's incompetent. I suppose some suckers, though, need to do those things to keep this population going. Not all women, but what I just described is all too common. Deny it all you want… you know I'm right.

Are you aware that you can get cancer in your breasts? No? You can. Now you’re aware. You’re welcome. Easier to figure out than girls posting up what color bra they’re wearing, wasn’t it?

Wait, what? You can get cancer on your breasts, too? I never knew that! Thank God for this post-the-color-of-your-bra campaign to raise my awareness!

My heart goes out to anyone who has suffered this or any other form of cancer, but seriously, I think we’re pretty well over-saturated with awareness for breast cancer by now. It’s an important cause, and I do donate to it, but there are many other important causes that don’t get their proportionate share of attention. I’ve come to feel that most of this breast cancer awareness crap is really just, “Rah! Rah! Grrl power!” and has very little to do with actually trying to save lives and reduce suffering.

See, it worked. I am aware. Now what?..

The problem with the “raise awareness” cliche is that all you DO is raise awareness. It does not lower apathy, no matter if you get twelve people talking, or a million.

What if, instead of “awareness” you substituted “money,” and tied the wink-winking status update spam to a link or site for donations, or redirected to organizations actively trying to eliminate cancer and desperately need funding?

Making a buzz is easy. Making a difference is not. After a while, people don’t care.

Hey guys, how about our own cause? :P

Generalizations and stereotypes hurt everyone – women and gay men being close to the top of the list. Why propagate hate? This is an article about spreading awareness for a good cause and taking positive action. As many women get stuck in miserable situations as men – we as people need to start making better choices.

Ugh. I take so many issues with this. FIRST of all- breast cancer does not just affect women. A small percentage of men are diagnosed with this disease, but beyond that many men lose the women they love.

Second of all- what kind of awareness is happening here? Was there anything that would “raise awareness” as to one’s risk factors? Or how about telling twenty-somethings when they should start getting mammograms (I have no clue).

Nope. It just seems to be an excuse to be coy and flirty-”It will be fun to see how long it takes before the men wonder why the women have a color in their status…..LOL!”- with the justification to “spread the wings of cancer awareness,” whatever that means here.

You want to post your bra color, more power to you. Don’t be fooled that it’s doing anything for breast cancer awareness.

Meg January 8, 2010

ALSO I am anticipating someone in the world will say, “But look at how much talk it’s create!”

Yes. But talk about what? Bra colors and this “awareness.”

Breast cancer groups are the most organized vehicle of the various cancers in terms of fundraising. They bring in the most dollars. Breast cancer does not need anymore “general awareness.” It needs practical awareness because even while highly publicized I know little about it. There are plenty of other cancers that need a general awareness coupled with a practical awareness.

I’m with you Cynthia. If you want to raise awareness, how about NOT doing it in a passive aggressive way?

Reply

Anne January 8, 2010

Wow, it’s just a bra color. It sounds to me that a lot of you seriously need to unclench!

Reply

Meg January 8, 2010

If it were just about a bra color, I don’t think people would take as much issue with it.
