Post-Avatar Depression (PAD)

Post-Avatar Depression (PAD)

by Jon on January 12, 2010

Some people are so into Avatar that they can’t bare to return to their own lives after flying around in the 3D cartoon world.  Watch the CNN Report:

I consulted my lawyers and I am finally able to publicly announce that I have discovered the cure for Post-Avatar Depression.

Make some real life friends. It’s easier than ever to find people in your area that are into the same things you are.  Sites like Going.com, MeetUp.com, and even Match.com allow you to search for people in your area that have similar interests to you.  Are you interested in going to see badly scripted 3D blockbusters?  Chances are other people in your town are too.  Sign up, create a profile, meet some new people, and soon your life will be as colorful as Pandora.  Hell, there’s probably a group for people that like to paint themselves blue and stick their tails into things too.  Can’t find a group for you?  Send me a message and I’ll find one for you.

Maybe you already have friends, but they’re not the best friends.  Stop hanging out with negative people and find yourself some go-getters.  Life can be stressful at times, and you need to surround yourself with people that will encourage you and keep your spirits up.  Some people like to whine about everything.  They can do that alone.  Avoid negative situations, even negative media.  If watching Cheaters or Cops brings you down, or if visiting your cousin always leaves you feeling empty and depressed, don’t do it.

Be interesting. People apparently love Avatar because it’s a spectacle.  You spend two and a half hours learning about all the different characteristics of this alien tribe.  Just when you think you know them, nope, they like to stick our tails in animals too.  Always something new and interesting with the Avatar creatures.  What would a movie about you be like?  Would it be about a guy that mopes around and feels bad about himself?  (If so Sophia Coppola and I would probably be into it.)  If that sounds boring to you, then make a change.  In the wise words of Harvey Danger, “If you’re bored then you’re boring.”  Work on creating those different layers that people can learn about you.  “Oh you wrote a book?  Oh you have your own YouTube video series? Oh you write a blog? Oh you can juggle? Oh you’re good with cars?  Oh you’ve mastered every position in the Kama Sutra?”  Put together a list of qualities like that and you’ll find it hard to leave your life for 2.5 hours to watch a CGI cartoon.

Get outta Dodge. Seriously, pack up and leave.   This is easier for some more than others, but if you’re bored out of your mind in your current life, sometimes sticking your roots (or tail) in a new, unfamiliar land can be exactly what you need.  That’s what I did.  Come to LA, I’ll introduce you to some nice people.

Leaving the theater after Avatar is over isn’t so bad if you have a rich, fruitful life to return to, so figure out what you need to do to make your own life interesting.  Then post it online, cuz I wanna see.

The thing about post-avatar depression is that I think it stems from realizing that we as humans have deviated so much from nature. In the US a few hundred years ago there were millions of native americans that lived in harmony with nature. With the arrival of the white man came the destruction of a culture that we should have learned from instead of destroying. The society we live in now is sick as desire fails to be on an equal level with need. Very few people are truly happy. I think this is the source of Post Avatar depression. People have realized that fulfillment and beauty is missing from our society. We live to work instead of working to live. I think Avatar would make any sane person a little depressed with this current society. Terra (Earth) could potentially be as beautiful as Pandora, and I believe she is, in her own way…..we just don't see it as much because of our modern, materialistic, and consumerist society. To make fun of people who realize this deep within their souls and suggest such mocking things as “be interesting” and “make some real life friends” only proves that you don't understand the deeper problem at hand. And suggesting to pack up and leave can bring some results, but you're not actually helping to fix the problem. More and more people should become activists to help change our world wherever they are. And LA is a terrible example of a place to move to, seeing as its culture only perpetuates everything that is wrong with this society.

Woe to Babylon who has not seen the error of her ways.

Peace and Love

This article is BULLSHIT. You copy-paste “how to get a life” from Ehow.

The cure is all about enjoying the fact that we can drive cars, buy pre-cut meat, and flying around the planet in planes. That cant be done on pandora.

shivamaru777 is also right, that true happyniss is hard to find, and that we live to work instead of work to live. But you must enjoy however you can. Bequese pandora is unreachable.

1. Nope, no cutting and pasting here.
2. It's not surprising that you Googled “how to get a life.”
3. You should probably read the “how to get a life” eHow article.
4. Enjoy your meat.

Exactly! When I walked out of Avatar I was so glad that I follow the Old Religion. I am not separated from my planet. The connection I have is as strong and as sweet as the one shown in the movie. There are not physical connectors. There do not need to be. So much in Avatar is allegorical.

You’re so right! I know this guy who knows this guy who has his own YouTube video series AND a blog and he’s way better than Avatar.

I have to disagree with the lady talking in this short vid i suffer servre PAD Post Avatar depression i have joined many forums seeking help for these suicidal feelings. people with pad can have reasonable life’s but the world that we live in is so greedy people are always out for themselves no one cares about the environment anymore. my suiciasl feelings are because i deeply feel by ending my life i will be reborn on pandora and be happy forever and ever and live in a world where humans are 100% connected to nature. i am currently typing this from my hospital ed cause my suicidal sepression was getting so bad that i had tryed to kill myself several times. there is no longer anything on this planet that makes me happy i could be the ritchest person in the world and i would still rather be on pandora with my fellow na’vi. now im expecting a lot of hate mail from typing this but since im already aso ashamed to be human it dosent bother me anymore
