I never miss an Evan Dando or Lemonheads show. I think I’ve seen him at least once a year since he started his comeback at the Brattle Theater in Harvard Square. Evan shows are sometimes genius, sometimes sloppy, sometimes entertaining as Hell, sometimes frustrating, but NEVER boring. Sometimes Evan is talkative and friendly, sometimes he flies through a set without acknowledging the crowd. Last year he gave us a drum solo during some technical difficulties at Spaceland, this past Saturday he gave us a sweet set with a pleasant mood with little interaction.
The sound is always great at the Hotel Cafe, and the room is small so even when it’s packed it’s a low-stress environment. There was no sell out crowd on Saturday, but the vibe was pretty positive. From what I hear, Evan is driving himself around from gig to gig. The man is a road warrior. Hopefully he stops by again soon, either solo or with The Lemonheads. Hopefully he brings The Candles with him too because I was hoping to check them out.
I have a photo on my phone that I forgot at home today, but here’s some video:
