Sara Quin (of Tegan and Sara) is not a fan of Tyler, the Creator

by Jon on May 13, 2011

In the past week, OddFuture’s Tyler, the Creator has made a mess of the Troubadour, caused a riot in Boston, and managed to piss off one half (well, I’m assuming both halves) of Tegan and Sara. In an open letter entitled “A Call For Change,” Sara Quin wonders why the media is not as horrified about Tyler’s lyrical content as she is.

When will misogynistic and homophobic ranting and raving result in meaningful repercussions in the entertainment industry? When will they be treated with the same seriousness as racist and anti-Semitic offenses? While an artist who can barely get a sentence fragment out without using homophobic slurs is celebrated on the cover of every magazine, blog and newspaper, I’m disheartened that any self-respecting human being could stand in support with a message so vile.

Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean it fucking sucks. I hate Tegan and Sara and I feel there just ignorant and rant about what they don’t know not to mention their lyrics are shallow and have no meaning but you dont see me saying they suck. It’s a matter of opinion and his raps are stories just like they make movies about rape and, drugs, and murder he makes songs that put images in your head.

Firstly, get some grammar skills so people can coherently read your argument. Secondly, Tyler, The Creator (of crap) is some 20 year old moron who is loving his spot in the limelight. Of course he’s an arrogant jerk, he’s 20 years old. He is that douchebag that we all went to high school with . I’m 21 years old and I admit, there are things I am yet to learn, but I do know how to behave like an adult.

This guy and his “crew” are comparable to ICP, and that is no compliment.
Someone tell me a valid, meaningful explanation behind these lyrics: “I just wanna drag your lifeless body to the forest/And fornicate with it but that’s because I’m in love with you, cunt.”

These are lyrics created by a boy, not a man, who puts no thought into what he says. You have young teens worshiping this imbecile, chanting along to his hollow words and praising him up. This isn’t music and it isn’t art; its vulgar and hateful speech being expressed by some kid who happened to catch the ears of another moron.

Reply

Dan May 16, 2011

How can someone who built a legacy from the ground up at the age of 20 years-old be a moron? Yeah, his lyrics are not for everyone, but he’s obviously not stupid, and you would realize that if you actually listened to the music. Have you ever listened to early Eminem. He used the same kind fo imagery. You can’t put art into a box. What have you done with your life at the age of 21? Are you touring the world, selling out music venues wherever you go? Are you independently wealthy yet? Are you forgetting that you’re American? Freedom of Speech can’t be limited to what people think should and shouldn’t be said, then it’s not freedom of speech. If you’re worried about kids listening to his music and taking it too literally, then look to the parents, not the artist.

The fact she’s actually taking Tyler seriously is an indication she lacks any semblance of intelligence.

Reply

Emily May 14, 2011

If you actually fully examined her argument, you would realize that she is very intelligent. Intelligent enough to point out the fact that while Tyler may not actually believe in the message in his lyrics, he still is putting a pretty nasty narrative out there. A narrative that is NOT being followed up with a discussion about it’s implications.

I think the simple minded people in this argument are those who brush away the message in the lyrics as not serious, or provocative. Tyler is making amazing music, I will not argue that, but that absolutely does NOT make those lyrics acceptable. Ever.

Hey Rozzo, I realize that you have no idea who Tegan and Sara are (as you’ve clearly stated) but maybe you should consider at least pretending to be minimally informed about a topic before responding to it. It seems fairly unlikely that a member of an indie rock band would be concerned about a rapper “stealing limelight away from here.” There’s a reason that Billboard offers different rankings for different genres.

I’m all for standing up for what you believe in and if they disapprove of his lyrics then so be it. But why just write a letter to him?? Are they going to just target him? Why not send letters to every artist who says homosexual slurs? They could have easily sent a letter to eminem or lil wayne. I feel as if they targeted Tyler because hes fresh and new. If they really want to make a change then why not make a song about it or start up a new LGBT group against media slurs? One letter to someone who’s not the head of anything besides his music group, is not going to change anything. Isn’t quote obvious from his lyrics that he doesnt give a fuck??

I’m a fan of both Tyler and Tegan&Sara btw.

Reply

Chris May 14, 2011

Exactly. It’s rare to find an intelligent comment on the internet, so it’s nice to find one that makes sense. Homosexual slurs have been prevalent in hip hop since (at the very least) the early 1990′s. This is genre-wide too, not just restricted to Eminem, so if they’re going to target one artist they might as well address the whole situation.

I feel like this is only the beginning of the backlash against Tyler, the Creator and OFWGKTA. However, people have to realise that they are still kids. Their ages range from 16-23. Did you really care that much about what other people thought about you at the time? Did you always think about the consequences of your actions? No. Their fans are primarily the same age. They will mature, just like everyone does, and this is a world where gay marriage and acceptance is increasing every day. It’s not something that is going to happen overnight, so targeting a bunch of kids who don’t give a damn about what you say is pointless.

Yeah, Tyler’s a homophobe. Except Syd Tha Kid, one of the producers in OFWGKTA, is a lesbian, and has produced dozens of his tracks. And she’s said she has no problem with his lyrics. Know why? Because she knows him personally, one of his best friends, and she knows that he is not actually advocating violence against women. And he uses the word “faggot” the way thousands of people his age (my age) use it in this country.
Sara Quin should know how to tell a progressive, level-headed post-modern kid apart from someone who’s actually ignorant and misogynistic.
What people fail to understand is that most people of our generation, of our age group (the educated ones, at least) are not homophobic, and don’t judge people based on sexual orientation. We’re a forward thinking generation that doesn’t get hung up on language. They’re just fucking words. I doubt Sara Quin even listened to the whole album. Does she also think that we shouldn’t allow depictions of rape in film? Tyler, the Creator is rapping from the perspective of different characters in order to tell a story, and if she fails to realize that, then she IS naive.

Reply

John May 14, 2011

Right, they’re just words. Would you feel the same way if some white rapper was using the N-word in every sentence?

There’s a double standard. THAT’S the point here. Whether Tyler has gay friends is utterly irrelevant. No one is arguing that he is truly hateful in his heart. But he’s using hateful language. And that’s not ok.

Reply

Rockboat May 14, 2011

Reply

i don’t think it’s a “progressive, level-headed post-modern kid” would be so backwards as to condone tossing around a derogatory term like “faggot.” that is not forward thinking. just as i would agree that someone saying, “that’s retarded” or “that’s gay” is just as bad.

are you homosexual? do you actually know what it’s like to be judged based on sexual orientation? i doubt you do or you wouldn’t have said that.

“just fucking words” mean just a fucking lot when when they’ve been thrown at your face while being physically mistreated for being homosexual.

BSQ May 14, 2011

Yeah, totally, I mean people thinks THIS is against Tyler, they can’t see it is about music industry and as much as they make money they don’t care of the message, if it is a joke or not it’s not important, I mean, the message by itself is making hate emerge, if you’re singing something that you don’t believe in, so…why are you singing it? you just care about money? fame? I thinks Tyler (as other musicians) needs to change the way they make money,….

Reply

G.W. Boy May 14, 2011

what do they want the record labels to do exactly. My personal thought process when it come to making argument is:

1) try to look at the argument from the other sides perspective to make sure there isn’t anything that I might be misunderstanding, if i still feel strongly then comes step two
2) bring attention to the problem tell the person what you dont like.
3) explain why
4) Tell the person EXACTLY what you want to change, because the other person isn’t going to know what you want them to do because they obviously have different views than you

sometimes people say things they don’t mean, its called irony and or sarcasm.

Sara Quin only speaks for a small, naive, ignorant group of women who give feminism a negative stereotype that feminists are an angry bunch of man-hating females parading under a veil of well-said words they think makes them sound enlightened. As a woman with liberal morals, I find everything she is saying here to be mostly dumb. It’s called having a sense of humor and reading between the lines, Sara. I’m not saying rape or using the word “faggot” is funny but there’s a huge difference between saying something genuinely and in jest, which I’m sure Tyler and Odd Future do when they write these lyrics. The fact Sara can’t see that only proves the point of them doing so since they get off on people’s outrage over it. You’ve proved their point, Sara! I personally hear worse things being said from women nowadays like Lady Gaga or Ke$ha that are impacting an even larger, younger audience. Sara Quin, you do NOT represent women as a whole!

Reply

Justin May 14, 2011

If you knew anything about Sara Quin you’d know she is FAR from one of the stereotypes you mention. She has a sense of humor and also listens to artists who have some questionable lyrics. The point of her post is not as simple as “I hate Tyler the Creator” and you are just throwing a fit because you think she’s attacking your pet rapper.

Oh, and I haven’t heard Lady GaGa sing about raping a pregnant woman and calling it a threesome.

Reply

Lindsey May 14, 2011

No, but far much worse Lady Gaga and Ke$ha write songs from a female perspective where they think they’re “empowering” a woman’s voice, but really present the world with more of the same demeaning themes: Women are sexual objects who can only get by via being provocative and sexual. It’s no wonder you have rappers like Odd Future talking about women in such a degrading manner.

Reply

G.W. Boy May 14, 2011

this is just a stupid statement.

wtf does pet rapper even mean, did you just make that up?

who are you to say that sara quin is not like what Lindsey said, both of you are just speculating, cause most likely you dont know if she has a sense of humor or listens to other artist with harsh lyrics (which if she does then why doesn’t she bitch about them to) its not like you know her personally and even if you do, who cares.

Reply

Cara May 14, 2011

AGREED. and lindsey, you’re ignorant to call a whole group ignorant. Sara is an amazing representative for women. rape isn’t funny.

Reply

Lindsey May 15, 2011

This is a lost cause to argue with people who are severely missing the point, and I don’t even like Tyler the Creator. I’m not condoning making fun of rape, but if Sara has such a huge problem with it, then why doesn’t she attack rappers who actually do glorify it in a serious sense and not in a comical sense? Oh wait… She doesn’t and has kept quiet all this time, but today she’s capitalizing on Odd Future’s hype at the moment for her own selfish publicity (whether she is aware of it or not. If you ask me, I think she’s loving the attention for trying to take the “holier than thou” route here.) I’d love to see her debate the issue with real gangster rappers who might retaliate against her in far worse ways than in lyrics (You can expect an Odd Future song alluding to this sometime soon.)

Finally, if she’s so against rape, why do she and Tegan keep doing just that whenever they make music? ZING!

Chill out, grow up, get a life people.

Yeah, uh. It’s unfortunate that people like T&S would only focus on the shallow shock stuff, given that Tyler has done a lot of criticism himself of this kind of behaviour within hip hop (in his lyrics) by subverting homophobic language, and honestly examining gender politics within family/romantic/sexual relationships etc…

The most telling quote in their write up is: “When will [homophobia and misogyny] be treated with the same seriousness as racist and anti-Semitic offenses?”

See, Tyler does make racist and anti Semetic remarks in his lyrics, too. A whole lot of them. But people who are paying attention understand the context in which they are presented, which is why nobody’s making a fuss about it.

It’s perplexing that T&S who have said they are not interested in discussing sexual preference and gender within their own music are taking offence with a group who do; despite the aggressive (and admittedly ugly) nature of the approach.

Obviously there is a section of people listening to Tyler who feel his lyrics are ironic and not to be taken seriously, who aren’t homophobic. But there’s a ton of other people who aren’t intelligent enough to consider his lyrics on any level other than face value, and those are usually the people who commit violence against gay people or toehr minorities. That’s the principle of what Sara is saying. It doesn’t matter if the person saying it doesn’t mean it, there’s still plenty of people out there who will assume they do mean it and let it reinforce their ignorance, and that’s where it becomes a problem, even dangerous.

Also, if he doesn’t mean these offensive lyrics, then what the heck is the point even using them? Likely that’s also Sara’s point. At least if he was homophobic you could say he’s saying it because it’s his opinion. If he’s just saying it to be – what, arty? Different? Ironic? Provocative? – and doesn’t mean it, he’s just spreading a bad message for no reason.

Reply

G.W. Boy May 14, 2011

those people are going to rape and hate anyways you can’t blame the music for that.

Reply

Yasmin May 15, 2011

Excellent point. What I respected the most about Sara’s statement was that it didn’t necessarily feel like a bashing on Tyler himself, but almost to the music industry for turning a blind eye. Tyler says he’s kidding, but they don’t realize that many of the people who eat up his so-called jokes are not picking that up. And by spreading the jargon of the rap industry around we in turn make it socially acceptable for a younger generation to grow up thinking that it’s okay to call another kid a faggot. It’s understandable that the fans of Tyler want us on the other side to just “relax and take a joke”, but why should joking about rape ever be okay when it’s real and it’s affecting people??!!

Rape is a million times worse, and we should be just as disgusted by a musician who pretends it’s ok.

Reply

Obviously we have the bitchy-dikes in one hand and the dirty-homophobes in the other hand !

I know, of course we don’t … but you’re acting like so. Some of you appear to think that Sara is lacking the point of Tyler’s music, she lacks of a sense of humour etc …
The other half thinks we shouldn’t spread hate bla bla bla

Well I guess nobody really wants my opinion on the subject but anyway …
Sara did criticise Tyler and every other rapper/performer who acts like him. And she was right to do so, if she feels that way than it’s normal that she stands up for what she believes in. If you read the letter closer you’ll find that what bothers her the most is the fact that nobody thinks there’s a problem in some lyrics that he’s written. And of course there is, it is violent, hateful, stupid …
I understand that he is doing so for the fun, in order to provoke, he is trying to do something new, unexpected (call that creative if you want)
But where is really disagree is the reason why he does so, it’s purely about being famous through some hardcore lines. It’s just not very clever provocation it has been seen a million times but sometimes with a brilliant message behind it. It doesn’t have any real purpose.
The line about the rape of a pregnant woman and the threesome thingy did surprise me but yes I can see how this can be funny etc …

But still, this guy has no real purpose, nothing to stand for so far, I don’t care if he’d hate the whole world if at least I’d give a reason for that.
(Oh and you suggested that people would be clever enough to see that this is not a serious album/song/band but they are not … especially if they are teenagers and this kind of lyrics becomes as common as anything else and it will, the more rap music is evolving the more it is stupid)
Anyway.

Reply

lol May 16, 2011

Tbh, that pregnant woman line is just a typical rap punchline. It’s intended to make the listener chuckle or go “SHIEET, YOU HEAR THAT?”.

Reply

I feel like people don’t really understand the point of OFWGKTA’s songs. It’s a similar idea to punk rock, in that they are doing things that most rappers and people consider taboo. Not only that, but as Tyler stated in a couple of his interviews, in many songs he’s playing a character. He’s rapping while being Wolf Haley or Ace The Creator, not while being him.

Plus, faggot and all of that is just slang. I call people gay or faggots all the time but I’m not calling them homosexual. “I failed my Math test.” “Oh man that’s gay.”

Art is supposed to say something. And I don’t like what Tyler the Creator has to say. I have listened to several of his songs on you tube, just to see what the big deal was, and was shocked. His songs, especially ***milk is more like a confession than a song. He graphically describes and promotes rape, murder, and a host of other offenses against humanity. If he were to speak these words, instead of rapping them, on a podium in front of an audience it would classified as hate speech.
Now, while it is possible to write a song that makes fun and simply presents a life that the artist himself does not believe in or condone, this just simply isn’t the case here. Tyler tells these stories from first person and the tone of the song leaves no doubt that his own sentiment is behind the words in the song.

Thank you for catching the point. I too listened to some of his songs. I was disgusted. Lyrics like that, if they were spoken from a speech or something people would would be like what is he saying. I allow alot of stuff to slip by in the music world but his lyrics just nasueate me.

G.G. Allen was a disgusting, vile punk rock “musician” who advocated rape, pedophilia, violence, racism and basically everything and anything that is deplorable in his music. He actually acted on these beliefs in real life, too, and yet there recently was a tribute album with the likes of Ben Gibbard, Mountain Goats, Ted Leo, Fucked Up and a host of other admired indie musicians covering his music in their own reinterpreted way on it. My point in bringing this up is that no one flinched at this news (probably because it was for charity) and because the songs were “reinterpreted,” they didn’t mean the same thing they did when Allen sang them. This is basically what Tyler, the Creator does with his music. Yes, he says the bad words but no, he doesn’t mean them. See the difference between artistic expression and sincerity, Sara Quin? If not, I’m pretty sure you’re friends with Gibbard and all those musicians, so maybe they can help explaining to you the difference.

Y’know what? Sara Quin is right here. I wouldn’t right a song about how I hate a black person, beecause I don’t and that would be rascist. Playing a character, or not meaning waht you sing, is no excuse. What his words say are still homophobic, and inexcusable. Own what you sing, tyler, and own what you hear, fans. And mainly, learn from your mistakes.

“Well I have gay fans and they don’t really take it offensive, so I don’t know. If it offends you, it offends you.”
“If you call me a nigga, I really don’t care, but that’s just me, personally. Some people might take it the other way, I personally don’t give a shit.” – Tyler said this in an interview with MTV.

Obviously not everyone is going to be offended, and some people will be. You don’t have to listen to him, if you don’t like it, ignore it.

I think that this is all ridiculous, yes, I’m a little late to comment, but I’d like to give my say anyway. For those saying Tyler and Oddfuture don’t stand for anything and rap without meaning, have not listened to all of his songs. Go and listen to the song Bastard, it is a song mainly directed towards his father, that is Tyler rapping about something that MEANS SOMETHING TO HIM. He has a purpose, he has a point he is trying to get out. While I understand where T&S are coming from, I think they are targeting just Tyler and Oddfuture. Eminem made songs about killing his wife and mother, isn’t that similar to what Tyler is rapping about? Why is Tyler being attacked just because he is new to the business? Tyler clearly stated in the song Bastard “I’m bad for you kids to listen to”, he is fully aware that he is not a role model to children, he never intended to be. So why do people keep saying “this isn’t what our children need.” He isn’t trying to be what your children need, he is rapping about what he feels like rapping about. Blaming Tyler for kids hurting others and raping, and using violence against others is just like when they tried blaming Marilyn Manson for the Columbine Massacre, just because those two boys listened to Marilyn Manson. As a sixteen year old girl who is a huge fan of Tyler and Oddfuture, I can say I’m not offended, I’m not taking his lyrics to heart, I’m not going to go out and act like Tyler and say things like him. People take shit too seriously, he’s telling a story, he says what he wants, and he really doesn’t give a fuck, if you guys haven’t noticed. He knows what he says is shocking “They say that I’m shock value
How about you hop off cock and turn volume down?” (Song: Nightmare) Not all of his songs are shocking, I suggest you people go and listen to Bastard and Nightmare, he raps about his love for his mom, and his issues with never knowing his dad, and how that hurts him. Oh, and to those saying he has no future, he is a lot like early Eminem, look how big Eminem got, obviously Tyler and Oddfuture have a chance in this business. They are 17-23, they’re already big.
