The BBC reports that Amsterdam’s famous red light
district plans to shut down about 1/3 of it’s brothels. Amsterdam ha srechaed a 25m euro deal to purchase 18 brothel buildings and turn them into stores or housing.
About 51 of these prostitute “store front” windows will be sold in the Wallen (as the area is known in Dutch), making it a little harder for wide-eyed tourists to ask how many euros a F&S will be. Email if you need an explantion of what an F&S is.
The Dutch sex workers’ union De Rode Draad, believes that the cut down on windows will mean more exploitation of women. “If the windows close down, women who are being exploited will be hidden somewhere else where union representations and health workers can’t make contact with them.”
In the red light district, prostitutes hire the windows for about 100 euros per day, and one window is used by several prostitutes.
