I don’t know what you wanted to be when you grew up, but I wanted to be Street Hawk. Bad ass motorcycle, check. Wear all black and speed through the streets of LA? Double check. Growing up on the mean streets of suburban Warwick, Rhode Island, all I ever wanted to be was a ninja until I saw there was an option to skip the martial arts classes and buy a badass motorcycle. Knight Rider seemed like like a pretty great option but the bike proved to be a lot more useful when doing things like hunting down bad guys and avoiding the law by cutting through narrow tunnels.

In the 80′s you had your choice of three ultra-manly role models:

Michael Knight/Knight Rider: Drove KITT, a bad ass talking Trans-am.

Stringfellow Hawke/Airwolf: Badass name, drove a badass killer helicopter which helped squash the idea that helicopters were the ladies of flying vehicles.

Jessie Mach/Street Hawk: All the badassery of the first two balancing on two wheels.

Next time you get pissed off at a lane-splitting motorcyclist flying past you on your morning commute, just think of Street Hawk. That guy is probably just living the dream.

Yes, that was George Clooney.

*Don’t even get me started on Manimal and Automan, that’s a post for another day.

Here I was thinking that Vocal Fry was just a weird LA lady accent when my friend Meredith from Boston tells me that it’s sweeping the nation (with an extra focus on Boston University girls.) This new annoying way of speaking is all the rage and apparently Kes$ha and the Kardashians are to blame.

I’m a little late on this so the world may already be savvy on the Vocal Fry, but here are some samples:

To a man, Vocal Fry is the vocal equivalent of a 30 minute conversation about menstruation. It should be used only when trying to disgust a man so much that he unfriends you on Facebook. Vocal Fry is the way a lactose intolerant vegan would talk after accidentally eating a block of cheese.

However, Vocal Fry is useful in separating the “I’d hit that” from the “Dude… no.” For that reason alone, it’s handy to have around.
