Check out these awesome pics from the Mayan. Yeah I’m still trying to figure out how to take photos with my phone. Anyway, let me see how fast I can bust out this review, and hopefully other people that were there can add their input.
First band, I’m still trying to figure out what their name was, but for now I’m calling them Spider because the singer was really tall with a black 70’s fuzz mop head of hair, and super long skinny legs,.. like really skinny, like the same width as my neck. He’s actually the touring utility guy for the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, I’d just never seen him wearing skinny jeans before. I feared bone breakage every time he did a rock star leap. The sound was pretty muddy, blame the Mayan acoustics of the use of Fender Amps. I wasn’t so into it, kinda sleepy with little rock explosions in the middle.
The second band, No Age, is an experimental rock duo from LA. I have a new name for this band: No Intros. Seriously, every song had a 2 minute intro and then the actual song was about 50 seconds. The crowd was full of squares that didn’t get it at all. I was one of those squares that didn’t get it at all. Maybe I did get it, maybe I overly got it.. but I’m past the noise for noise sake, I don’t even pretend to like Pavement anymore.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were incredible as usual. I was worried when they first came on stage with “Sealings” from the Spiderman soundtrack because Karen’s mic was way low and that would be a long show to sit through. Eventually they turned it up, but only just enough to hear her shrieks, so no melodic Karen for us last night. It was the best setlist I’ve heard from them so far, highlights included Art Star, Turn Into, and Tick. They played maybe three of the songs off of their new EP Is Is, which is a really recognizable throwback to their older style, the older style being a bit thinner and disjointed as opposed to today’s thicker/more melodic songs like Gold Lion, Turn Into, and Sealings.
So, great show once the Yeah Yeah Yeahs took the stage, even though the sound was sub par. Also, $7 Bud Light bottles is ridiculous.

Yeah Yeah Yeah that was awesome last night. Can’t believe that I ran in to LA Snark at that concert.
BTW- I love the new LA Snark Blog. It’s the best place for snarkarfic news!

Wow, Snark. Were we even at the same show?! If No Age had had some help from The Mayan’s stage crew, their final would have blown you away. Dude pounding on a snare drum and inarticulate guy with a guitar = magic.
